St Catherine Laboure, Putatan: A brief

PUTATAN—The Catholic Church of St Catherine Laboure, Putatan, was built on a piece of land donated by the late Catherine Moinin @ Enging, located in Kampung Imbaan, Putatan, Sabah.

The proposal for the construction of the St Catherine Laboure Church was initiated in Feb 2008 by the late Fr Fundes Motiung, Datuk Marcus Mojigoh, Datuk Stephen Laison Sondoh, Tony Mojigoh, Dr Ar Tan Jung Kwang, and several others to accommodate the needs of the Catholic community in the Putatan area for the coming years.

However, the initial work for the construction of the church could only begin on Jan 12, 2013, with an initial capital of RM1.8 million, which came from contributions by the state government and the public. To complete the church, according to estimates and material costs at that time, the cost was estimated at RM10.4 million. So far, the structural work is almost 80 percent complete.

Due to limited funds, construction work has been delayed several times, and during the Covid-19 pandemic from 2019 until now, construction work was completely halted.

Towards the end of 2023, Archbishop John Wong requested the Steering Committee for the Development of St Catherine Laboure Church, Putatan to reactivate the committee in order to oversee the completion of the church.

After a series of site visits by Archbishop John, the first step taken by the Steering Committee was to obtain an estimated cost for completing the whole six-storey church complex, which is expected to be RM11,257,000.00, while the cost for completing only the church, which is at the upper floor, is RM6,282,222.01. Therefore, upon the advice of the Archbishop, the Steering Committee decided to proceed with the construction of the church only and will proceed with the rest of the building when funds are available.

To proceed with the construction, the Steering Committee has also obtained Police Permit approval for public collection, License Number FTMT No.13/2024 DLM.61/6/5, valid until Oct 22, 2025.

The tender for the church preparation work was issued on Apr 30, 2025, while on May 19, 2025, the work contract was awarded to the qualified bidder. For anyone who would like to donate for the completion of the church, you may bank in to the account stated here:
